Tilt is one of the factors that can really lose you a large amount of money at the poker table. I've seen so many people go bust simply because they were on tilt, which is why this article is designed to try to help you avoid tilt.

First of all what do we mean by tilt? Tilt refers to a negative mood, often induced by a bad beat, an unlucky run of the cards, or by the taunts or actions of other players at the table.

A player is on tilt when they stop using logic and well timed plays, and start firing wildly without taking into consideration their starting cards, the players they are in the pot with, or any of the cards on the board.

Remember that at the end of the day, online poker is just a game, repeat it: online poker is just a game! If you ever find yourself in the situation where you are losing money through bad play then just stop. Close down your poker client software and just go do something else until you have managed to calm yourself.

A good way of avoiding tilt is to ignore the outcome of a pot if you lose - do not be results lead. If you play your hand in the best possible way, but someone manages to hit a lucky card then do not let it get you mad. You did nothing wrong, the other player just managed to get lucky - it happens! If you get into the mindset of concentrating on playing at your very best then you will help yourself to avoid tilt.

You may also choose to lower your variance in order to combat tilt - this means you will play fewer hands, and only enter the pot with a very strong, premium hand. This style of tight, passive play allows you to slowly build your chip stack and regain your composure after a large beat.

Tilt is the most common cause of players losing large portions of their bankroll, so:

  • Stay cool, stay calm, stay collected, stay focused

  • Never let a bad beat get to you, you cannot win every hand and the important thing is that you play every hand as well as you can

  • Don’t take the other players at the table too seriously; the Internet is full of people who will happily insult you simply because they know there is nothing you can do about it. They wouldn’t dare say half the things they say if they were in a real life casino where you can actually stare into their eyes

And finally, ALWAYS play within your current bankroll. If you have a bankroll of $2,000 losing a $50 buy in isn’t the end of the world, but losing a $50 when you only have a bankroll of $60 is not only upsetting, but is likely to put you on tilt!
